Payments Ecosystem: The Ledger Layer
In order for a transaction to take place, there must be a recorded pool of value for the payor to draw from, and a recorded pool of value for the payee to add to. The Ledger Layer is where accounts are used to track value, and where value is debited or credited during a transaction. These can range from traditional bank and credit card accounts to the distributed ledgers of cryptocurrencies. Examples include:
- Bank Accounts
- Demand deposit account (chequing or savings)
- Credit card account
- Loan account
- Registered accounts
- Distributed Ledgers (Blockchain)
- Prepaid Cards
