# Payments Canada welcomes new board member

December 7, 2022

Payments Canada is pleased to announce Dr. Anju Virmani, former Chief Information Officer at Cargojet, Canada’s leading supplier of time-sensitive air cargo services, as a new member on its [Board of Directors](https://www.payments.ca/about/governance-risk/board-directors), effective December 6, 2022.

Dr. Virmani brings with her a wealth of board experience that will serve Payments Canada, its stakeholders and the payments industry well. The board will also lean on her 20 years of professional experience in which she garnered extensive operational knowledge at the C-Suite level.

The Payments Canada Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in governing and managing the affairs of Payments Canada with a focus on strategic and policy matters. As set out in the *[Canadian Payments Act](http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-21/FullText.html)*, our independent board that reflects our membership is composed of a majority of independent directors, augmented with financial institution member representatives who are experts in the payment industry.

Dr. Virmani currently sits on the Boards of Ontario Health and Ontario Power Generation. She has also served on the Boards of the Toronto Transit Commission, the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network, and CentrePort Canada, North America’s largest inland port in Winnipeg. Her other appointments include the Advisory Council for National Security, the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on National Security and the Schulich School of Business Advisory Committee.

With the addition of Dr. Virmani, Payments Canada thanks outgoing director Susan Doniz for her many contributions over the course of her term.

Payments Canada looks forward to working with its new and returning board of directors, along with the members of the advisory councils and its regulators, to ensure Payments Canada remains well positioned for the future.
