By adopting the ISO 20022 financial messaging standard, which allows enhanced remittance data to travel with a payment, the Receiver General will modernize its own processes and improve efficiencies. The transition to ISO 20022 will support interoperability with global payment ecosystems, will enable new opportunities for financial products and services, and bring new levels of efficiency to the Canadian economy. Launching in 2023, the Real-Time Rail (RTR) payment system will support faster payments 24/7/365 that are irrevocable, and use the ISO 20022 financial messaging standard for all transactions. The RTR will also act as a platform for innovation, allowing for the development of new products and services by third-party providers that will give Canadians new and faster ways to pay and transfer money.
